A Surprise Birthday Bash at My Place!

Emma had worked at the same company in the quiet town of Oakbridge for a decade, never once falling out with anyone. She always made an effort to stay on good terms with her colleagues, keeping relationships warm and friendly. But with Elizabeth, it had been different—they shared a bond over their love of gardening and countryside escapes. Their friendship had grown, their husbands got along, and their families often spent time together. Now, though, Elizabeth’s selfishness was straining their friendship, leaving Emma torn between forgiveness and walking away.

Last year, Emma and her husband had fulfilled their dream—they bought a charming cottage just outside Oakbridge. After months of hard work, they’d made it cosy and began inviting friends over. Elizabeth and her husband had visited several times already that year, and Emma was happy to share their little haven. But she hadn’t expected Elizabeth to treat the cottage as if it were her own.

The trouble began when Emma secured three weeks’ leave—a rare chance to relax and tend to the cottage before winter. She planned to tidy the garden, prepare the house for the colder months, and return to work on the 12th of November. But the 11th was Elizabeth’s birthday, and as it turned out, she had decided—without asking—that she would celebrate it at Emma’s cottage.

It was absurd. The cottage had poor signal, and when Elizabeth couldn’t reach Emma, she took the silence as consent. Meanwhile, Emma was deep in chores—weeding, cleaning, winter-proofing—not even considering guests. She only learned of Elizabeth’s plans once back in town. A phone call came: “We’re celebrating at yours! Get ready, there’ll be about fifteen of us.”

Emma was stunned. Her husband was firm: no. The cottage wasn’t set up for guests—the sauna was unfinished, tools were packed away, and the garden was winter-ready. Worse, half the guests were strangers to Emma. Hosting a crowd, decorating, cooking, then cleaning up—all before work the next day? Impossible.

Gathering her courage, Emma explained why it wouldn’t work. Elizabeth froze, her face twisting in shock and hurt. She hadn’t expected refusal. “But I’ve already invited everyone!” she blurted. “You’re always happy to host!” She pressed, but Emma held firm. With two days to find another venue, Elizabeth lashed out instead.

“You’re a terrible friend!” she snapped. “You can’t even help with one party when I was counting on you! After all we’ve shared!” Her words stung. Emma had expected a birthday invitation—but now, she didn’t even want one. She had no idea whether the party had happened, but the bitterness between them was thick.

The next day at work, Emma braced for tension. Elizabeth surpassed her fears—ignoring her completely, turning away pointedly, her gaze full of contempt as if Emma had betrayed her. Colleagues noticed, and the office grew stifling. Guilt nagged at Emma, though she knew she’d done nothing wrong. Her cottage wasn’t a free party venue—she had every right to say no.

Now, she hesitated. Should she swallow her pride and apologise for a non-existent fault? Let the friendship fade? Elizabeth had been dear to her, but her selfishness and unfair accusations made Emma wonder: had their bond ever been real? Standing at this crossroads, every choice felt painful. Maybe time would guide her—but for now, her heart ached with hurt and disillusionment.

True friendship shouldn’t demand sacrifices of pride or principle—it should respect boundaries as much as it cherishes closeness.
